IMHO that's worse, but than again, it could just be me.

The usual practice refers to full stops after normal words; I don't think
using "etc." would be really a violation.

It certainly is, that's why I didn't suggest removing it completely.
Getting rid of it would just be convenient since we won't have to deal with
it anymore, not because it's bad per se.
