You're using the old non-KMS kernel driver. xf86-video-ati 7.2.0
(installed when WITH_NEW_XORG is set) only supports the KMS driver.

If you don't use GENERIC, check your kernel configuration file and don't
include "dri" and "radeon" devices into your kernel. It's not needed
anyway, because xf86-video-ati will automatically load the appropriate
kernel module.
