suggested xorg-compatible video HW for FreeBSD/amd64 ?

In your case I suggest to try Nvidia first with their binary drivers.

If they do not work, use any Radeon with open-source driver, you should 
have accelerated 2d and overlay video support, but no 3d acceleration on 
Radeon.
