Updated, no lock ups now. However, the corruption is still here, 
http://i.imgur.com/YHlr6.png .

I booted into an older ubuntuCD and saw the same corruption, but maybe 
only 2% of the screen was flakey.
I'm now leaning towards a hardware issue.  :(
