 FWIW, now I am back from my sabbatical. Having been away for a whole
 year, I upgraded my system to 7.3-STABLE, blew away and rebuilt the
 ports with the latest ports tree, and the X server now works pretty
 good. My only complaint is that it often does not exit cleanly, and if
 I then kill -KILL it, I get psychedelic screen syndrome and must
 reboot. (OTOH, who wants to log out anyhow? It's a desktop machine in
 my office. I xlock it when I go home.) Not sure if I can follow up a
 lot more. I expect to get new hardware in the not too distant future,
 and then the problem just might evaporate.
