This has recently been added for linux, so some multiple card setups are rumored to work now. I haven't looked at exactly what it is going to take to get it working on FreeBSD though. If someone wants to take this on, that would be great. robert. > Thanks. > > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-x11@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-x11 > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-x11-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" -- Robert Noland FreeBSD From linimon at FreeBSD.org Tue Nov 3 20:16:30 2009 From: linimon at FreeBSD.org (linimon@FreeBSD.org) Date: Tue Nov 3 20:16:42 2009 Subject: ports/140254: x11-drivers/xf86-video-cirrus: Black Screen with Cirrus X Languana driver and CL-GD5465 AGP card Message-ID: <200911032016.nA3KGTT1097436@freefall.freebsd.org> Old Synopsis: Black Screen with Cirrus X Languana driver and CL-GD5465 AGP card New Synopsis: x11-drivers/xf86-video-cirrus: Black Screen with Cirrus X Languana driver and CL-GD5465 AGP card Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-ports-bugs->freebsd-x11 Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Tue Nov 3 20:16:12 UTC 2009 Responsible-Changed-Why: Over to maintainer(s). http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=140254 From a.huth at tmr.net Wed Nov 4 12:40:11 2009 From: a.huth at tmr.net (Alex Huth) Date: Wed Nov 4 12:40:18 2009 Subject: xorg on Dell Latitude E6500 with nvidia NVS card Message-ID: <20091104112059.GC15739@borusse.borussiapark> Hi! In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 6.x/7.x/-current with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: x11-drivers/xf86-video-nsc broken because: does not build build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11-drivers&portname=xf86-video-nsc If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD. Is rnoland@ the only person working on > this? AFAIK, yes... I'm intending to update to at least basic set of 7.5 ports. There are some issues that need to be resolved though. We can't update the Intel driver without losing drm support and the current driver doesn't build against Xserver 1.7.1. This is probably not a major patch-up job, but I haven't looked at it in detail yet. The other main issue is that updating libdrm will break nouveau support and I haven't decided what to do about that yet. I'm happy to have help as my TODO list is quite lengthy and so it tends to be more a question of what I feel like working on on any given day. We just need to figure out how to effectively coordinate multiple peoples efforts. I have many of the ports updated in my cvs tree, but a full review of currently shipping versions needs to be done, as well as resolve the issues mentioned above. robert. > Regards, > b. > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-x11@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-x11 > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-x11-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" -- Robert Noland FreeBSD From greg at netpublishing.com Tue Nov 10 20:07:26 2009 From: greg at netpublishing.com (Gregory W. I have WIP branches for GEM and TTM. I haven't done anything towards KMS yet. Both GEM and TTM are non-trivial ports though and my current work queue, I don't have an ETA on having anything functional. robert. > The other > > main issue is that updating libdrm will break nouveau support and I > > haven't decided what to do about that yet. > > > > I'm happy to have help as my TODO list is quite lengthy and so it tends > > to be more a question of what I feel like working on on any given day. > > We just need to figure out how to effectively coordinate multiple > > peoples efforts. > > > > I have many of the ports updated in my cvs tree, but a full review of > > currently shipping versions needs to be done, as well as resolve the > > issues mentioned above. > > > > robert. > > > >> Regards, > >> b. > >> _______________________________________________ > >> freebsd-x11@freebsd.org mailing list > >> http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-x11 > >> To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-x11-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > -- Robert Noland FreeBSD From office at atn.com Fri Nov 13 13:42:17 2009 From: office at atn.com (Dr. Harris Conklin) Date: Fri Nov 13 13:42:29 2009 Subject: Your Ref: SNT/ATM/822 Message-ID: <20091113134217.33FAB10656BA@hub.freebsd.org> Our Ref: FGN/SNT/RAL Your Ref: SNT/ATM/822 Attn: I am directed to inform you that your payment verification and confirmations are correct, Therefore we are happy to inform you that arrangements have been concluded to effect your payment as soon as possible and in our bid to transparency. Basically, the system would have problems with opening the mouse device twice and you'd have a situation where xevents wouldn't occur until the mouse was moved. (Example: typing in an xterm the text wouldn't appear until you moved the mouse.) That problem was solved. However, I just upgraded my workstation to 8.0-RC2, and I've found the same sort of behaviour. Killing the moused appears to fix it. I was wondering if anyone else is seeing behaviour like this? I think that what Robert may be saying is that even if it's default is 'on', people will turn it off, and we might see lots of questions about why this port or that port isn't working. Maybe you can investigate a few ports that may need the xcb-ness of libX11 and see what it takes to make them work in an xcb-free flavor of libX11 (or hint at build time that they won't work if libX11 doesn't have xcb). The alternative is to commit this change and just see what breaks. But doing a little investigation ahead of time to give us a heads up about what to expect would be useful. The issue I believe is that xcb is special... Ports which depend on xcb do have options and/or dependencies on xcb, however I don't think that is sufficient WRT libX11. i.e. if you build a port with xcb enabled, but libX11 was built without, I think you may be in for trouble. In this case something is already broken, either libX11, the application, or both. Building libX11 with xcb means that the Xlib API is implemented as wrappers around xcb calls instead of the original Xlib internals and X protocol requests. One can argue that building libX11 without xcb could result on ABI breakage but this would be a bug in libX11 that ought to be fixed. > I might be incorrect here, but I would like to see an EXP run proving it. > Preferably with some actual run-time testing as well. I have been running XFce, Firefox, Seamonkey and dozens of X applications for *months* without any issue. Most of those applications were written years before it started to depend on xcb. In fact, most of the X apps and the libraries they require were written years before xcb started to exist! >> > The alternative is to commit this change and just see what breaks. >> >> Ports that break are already broken and must be fixed. I'm not proposing this, except as an investigation approach. >?My concern is for cases where libX11 doesn't have xcb enabled and > later a user installs a port that does have xcb enabled. You are missing the point. Applications that require libX11 rely on the *Xlib* API, not on the xcb API. So libX11 just - optionally - uses the xcb API, without exposing or extending it. I'd like to emphasize that this is *optional*. That's why the configuration script provides the "--without-xcb" option at all! -- My preferred quotation of Robert Louis Stevenson is "You cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs". From linimon at FreeBSD.org Sat Nov 21 07:29:35 2009 From: linimon at FreeBSD.org (linimon@FreeBSD.org) Date: Sat Nov 21 07:29:41 2009 Subject: FreeBSD ports that you maintain which are currently marked broken Message-ID: <20091121072934.ECEBF1CCCE@mail.droso.net> Dear FreeBSD port maintainer: As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of problems in the FreeBSD ports system, we periodically notify users of ports that are marked as "broken" in their Makefiles. Ask on one of their forums. Yes, PC-BSD users often have issues like this. Another common cause is not having updated libtool according to ports/UPDATING - namely still having files left from libtool15. The archives of this list have all these answers already, so it's useful to consult the archives and say what solutions you already tried, if any, to resolve the problem. Lastly (and often forgotten) follow up when you fix the problem. If you were to make the cvs tree available, or some diffs, and an up-to-date TODO list, perhaps a few people may be able to take finish off some of the smaller tasks for you, and later test the code on various hardware before it enters Ports. I noticed that when I add the line "BusType" "PCI", the driver radeon works fine, and xorg too. I can't post a Xorg.0.log when AGP is turned on, because when I reboot while the system is freezed, the log is not keeped in /var instead I found the previous (of working X) log. As far as I can see there is right now no support for the RV870 chip the HD5850 uses. So - what do I have to expect? I need dual monitor support. Will it work? Ok, since it is hard right now to get a HD5850 anyway I guess I have to wait until at least digital output is working (digital out and dual monitor support i need at least). Is there a place where I could "monitor" if the drivers gets updated with rv8xx support? http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-radeonhd There? Or would it be a "patchset" at first anyway so it won't pop up there? -- Oliver Lehmann http://www.pofo.de/ http://wishlist.ans-netz.de/ From rnoland at FreeBSD.org Wed Nov 25 16:26:50 2009 From: rnoland at FreeBSD.org (Robert Noland) Date: Wed Nov 25 16:26:57 2009 Subject: ATI HD5850 support? I haven't poked the guys from AMD about this lately, but I know that they were working on it. I don't know yet exactly what will be needed to make them work. If indeed there is something special about them that requires KMS, then it won't be quick unfortunately. Actually, I just poked the guys from AMD... and it appears that nothing particularly special is required. So, once AMD releases the code I should be able to incorporate the changes fairly quickly. They did state (as adam mentioned) that digital outputs are being problematic right now, so that still needs a bit of love. I don't have an ETA at this point, but I don't expect it to be too much longer. robert. -- Robert Noland FreeBSD From adamk at voicenet.com Wed Nov 25 16:36:40 2009 From: adamk at voicenet.com (Adam K Kirchhoff) Date: Wed Nov 25 16:36:47 2009 Subject: ATI HD5850 support? Right, and I was just thinking 2D modesetting :-) So, to summarize, hopefully once r8xx modesetting is enabled in the xf86- video-ati driver, it will compile/work on FreeBSD without any extra effort. 2D acceleration (including EXA and Xv) will require kernel support, which will need to be written for Linux first and then ported over by rnoland. Remember that Robert is the only committer who is working on this (and in his spare time), and that last time he and Florent were criticized for moving too quickly in updating Xorg. It's not easy to get Xorg to work well on the wide range of hardware that it needs to support, and Xorg has been undergoing some changes, some of which have been made by upstream developers who are preoccupied with Linux. FreeBSD would do well to try to attract more developers to work on Xorg support, and to look at what changes NetBSD and OpenBSD have made for their in-tree Xorg. b. libdrm is 2.0 There's the problem. That's /usr/ports/graphics/libdrm, and it needs to be updated. Additionally, I'm not sure how well the current version works on 6.1, which is nearly four years old. If you're starting fresh, it'll be easier to just install FreeBSD 8, update the ports tree, and install xfce4 from there. (Yes, FreeBSD 8 is prerelease at the moment. For desktop use with xfce4, I'd still pick it over 7.2-RELEASE.) If you really want to stick with 6.1, then... it's going to be a lot of work. You have some very old ports on there, and the interdependencies can be tricky. It may be easiest to just deinstall all the ports ([warning!] pkg_delete -a), update the ports tree with csup or portsnap, and start installing the new versions. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From ertr1013 at student.uu.se Wed Nov 25 21:01:01 2009 From: ertr1013 at student.uu.se (Erik Trulsson) Date: Wed Nov 25 21:01:09 2009 Subject: install of xfce4 from ports collection on FreeBSD 6.1 failed - Maurice In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20091125204421.GA51875@owl.midgard.homeip.net> On Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 11:20:18AM -0700, Maurice wrote: > Hi, > > When installing xfce4 on a fairly clean install of FreeBSD 6.1, it errored > out with the following: > > > checking pkg-config files for X11 are available... yes > checking for LIBDRM... configure: error: Package requirements (libdrm >= > 2.4.3) were not met: > > Requested 'libdrm >= 2.4.3' but version of libdrm is 2.0 That seems very clear to me. You have libdrm 2.0 installed, but xfce4 (or one of its dependencies most likely) requires libdrm 2.4.3 or later. You will need to update libdrm first. (You should probably consider updating all of your installed ports/packages. Having some of the installed ports/packages compiled from an old ports tree and some of them compiled from a newer version of the ports tree is generally not a good idea. Things can break in strange ways if you mix versions that way.) -- Erik Trulsson ertr1013@student.uu.se From linimon at lonesome.com Wed Nov 25 23:31:19 2009 From: linimon at lonesome.com (Mark Linimon) Date: Wed Nov 25 23:31:26 2009 Subject: xorg ports roadmap?
