I'm having similar problems with the xf86-video-mga-1.9.100 driver.

The starting resolution is 1280x1024 even though 1024x768 is the
highest in the Xorg.conf file. Additionally, the mode change keys
(CTRL+ALT+KEYPAD+ or CTRL+ALT+KEYPAD-) do not work.

Mplayer will play video in the 1280x1024 mode but if I change it
to 1024x768 by using xrandr then I also get the blue screen
instead of the video.

Xorg.log excerpt:

I can supply any info that would help as well as do testing of
patches, etc.

In the meantime, I've switched back to xf86-video-mga-1.4.7 version
but its easy to switch to the latest for testing since I have both
port skeletons.
