6.2 in vmware, 1280 by 800

I'm having trouble convincing vmware 6.0.2 (under XP) and the vmware 
driver for 6.2 (and
PC-BSD 1.4) to fit the full 1280 by 800 that my portable provides.

It seems to come up wanting a much larger resolution and a lot of the 
screen is accessible only
using scrollbars.

Is there a magic recipe?

I'm happy to upgrade to 7.0 beta if that would help greatly, so long as 
I can:
 a) convince the miniBSD scripts to run and
 b) install a working JRE
