http git clone method not working

FYI-

I'm working through the upgrade instructions on the wiki page. For the git 
clone step I wanted to use http since the firewall here blocks most other 
things. It failed:

# git clone http://git.xbsd.org/freebsd/ports.git
error: Unable to start request
error: Could not interpret heads/master as something to pull

The "git" URL (through a backdoor) is working, but I wanted to let people 
know.
