no keyboard layouts in kde after moving to modular xorg

After switching to modular xorg last night I get a little popup from
GNOME about some problem with xkbd and no mouse themes either. I
wonder if this is related.  I have not yet looked into it beyond just
reinstall xkeyboard-config which did not fix it.
