gears vs. glxgears; i915 for Linux binaries?

I replaced the dri/ subdirectory installed by the linux_dri port with that 
from inside the Fedora Core 4 xorg-x11-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm .

Unfortunately, that is NOT enough. gears and glxinfo both write complain, that 
``InitDriver failed'' (in intel_screen.c line 114).

What else should I fetch? Thanks!
