I second the thanks. Have had similar problems with my own on-board radeon, after getting dri working briefly last November. Attached is a Jan 24 boot as recorded in the /var/log/messages file - system had been rebuilt, along with ports, Jan 22. Seems the fireworks started in the writeback test of radeon_cp_init_ring_buffer, if I'm reading it right.
