Just had a chance to review some of the archived messages on this
subject and thought I would offer what help I could to resolve this
issue. I have little experience with debugging techniques but can
follow directions.
I'm running FreeBSD 5.4 on two machines. Both allow startx access as
root at this time.
If you thing I might be of help, let me know. If not, I certainly can
understand given my lack of experience.

I need to review .Xauthority and see what it's all about. Hopefully,
I'll find the answer soon.
