 What driver are you using in X.org?  Does this happen if you start a
 bare X.Org (maybe with an xterm, not some fancy gnome/kde term) and then
 run a command-line tool that outputs sound?  I'm trying to establish
 whether X.Org or its drivers are at fault here.
