The GNOME FAQ's 23rd entry at
http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q23
puts the autologin entries under the [security] header of /usr/local/etc/gdm/custom.conf, but GDM does not login automatically.
Perhaps the entry was only relevant in GNOME 2.18, and gdm's behavior has changed since.
