The first part of this process is now complete. All upcoming events on http://www.FreeBSD.org/events/ now include a link to a search result page for the event name on upcoming, so that interested parties can see who else is attending, post pictures, arrange a carpool, or whatever. I also added links from all past events to the Flickr and Google Blog Search result pages for the event name as the query. This provides quick access to pictures, trip reports, presentations, etc after the events are over. The more interesting part of the problem would be to integrate our events.xml database more directly into upcoming so that events in one would automatically show up in the other. I started writing some XSLT and Perl code to use the API (http://upcoming.yahoo.com/services/api/) to search for events. After checking that an event doesn't exist, my script attempts to find the metro area, venue, and other details in the upcoming service and then creates a new event as the 'FreeBSD Events' user. Of the four upcoming events listed in events.xml, two were already listed on upcoming. The NYCBSDCon 2008 entry (http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/776363) was added automatically by the script, but the script failed to find an appropriate metro area for the 9th Libre Software Meeting so it could not export this to upcoming. If I can make the script a little more robust I will set it up in cron to automatically add events that we add to events.xml into upcoming.yahoo.com. My approach was to extract the relevant data for upcoming events from events.xml into a simple text format with XSLT : http://people.freebsd.org/~murray/patches/templates.events2upcoming.xsl. The text output is then parsed and sent to Upcoming using the WebServices::Upcoming Perl module (after patching it to work properly, http://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=36567). Patches to improve this process are welcome. Now it only we had a video hosting site that hosted technical videos from BSD conferences we'd be set. For some reason, we are not as good at posting videos from conferences onto YouTube as we are at posting pictures onto Flickr and writing trip report blog posts. - Murray From bugmaster at FreeBSD.org Mon Jun 9 11:07:09 2008 From: bugmaster at FreeBSD.org (FreeBSD bugmaster) Date: Mon Jun 9 11:07:56 2008 Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <200806091107.m59B780K070926@freefall.freebsd.org> Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Tracker Resp. In the future I think we should just focus on having a script automatically add the events to upcoming rather than making a manual fix for this one entry where the upcoming title is different from the events.xml title. - Murray On Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 5:25 AM, Rodrigo OSORIO wrote: > >>Number: 124611 >>Category: www >>Synopsis: wrong upcoming event link in the news >>Confidential: no >>Severity: non-critical >>Priority: low >>Responsible: freebsd-www >>State: open >>Quarter: >>Keywords: >>Date-Required: >>Class: sw-bug >>Submitter-Id: current-users >>Arrival-Date: Sun Jun 15 12:30:10 UTC 2008 >>Closed-Date: >>Last-Modified: >>Originator: Rodrigo OSORIO >>Release: >>Organization: > fug-fr >>Environment: >>Description: > In the FreeBSD events[1] registred in the website as "9th Libre Software Meeting", a yahoo upcoming event link was added, but it uses a wrong keyword. > > The current link is : http://upcoming.yahoo.com/search?type=Events&q=9th%20Libre%20Software%20Meeting&Search=GO > > But it must be: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/search/?type=Events&q=rmll&rt=1&loc=&Search=GO > > > > > > > > > > > > > > [1] http://www.freebsd.org/events/#event:3 >>How-To-Repeat: > >>Fix: > > >>Release-Note: >>Audit-Trail: >>Unformatted: > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-www@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-www > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-www-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > From murray at FreeBSD.org Mon Jun 16 18:23:02 2008 From: murray at FreeBSD.org (murray@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon Jun 16 18:23:04 2008 Subject: www/124611: wrong upcoming event link in the news Message-ID: <200806161822.m5GIMuV7011584@freefall.freebsd.org> Synopsis: wrong upcoming event link in the news Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-www->murray Responsible-Changed-By: murray Responsible-Changed-When: Mon Jun 16 18:21:43 UTC 2008 Responsible-Changed-Why: Maybe we can add an optional tag for each event in events.xml, and when it exists, use that in the upcoming url. The default would just be to use the as we do now. This seems like a good compromise until the upcoming events are added automatically from events.xml. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=124611 From kevchrsmi at gmail.com Mon Jun 16 20:34:28 2008 From: kevchrsmi at gmail.com (K.C. It seems that things have gone OK, but: The moinmoin people changed some of the markup... (no comments on that in public forums...) so there are some differences. Hopefully they are minor, but there is not really anything to be done about that. The positive part is that the changes I have seen make the markup more similar to mediawiki (used on wikipedia) so perhaps that will make it simpler for users of other wiki's. Please let me know of any problems. Known issues are and will be documented on http://wiki.freebsd.org/AboutWiki . I need to make a few more adjustments to the wiki so there will be minor disruptions in the coming days, but hopefully that should not be noticeable. I'm responsible for a MoinMoin server myself, so I know it's not necessarily trivial to maintain, especially when you've customized a lot of things. (Having said that, I *do* like MoinMoin and would recommend it anytime.) Simon L. Nielsen wrote: > [...] > I need to make a few more adjustments to the wiki so there > will be minor disruptions in the coming days, but hopefully > that should not be noticeable. Well ... I notice the following: "You triggered the wiki's surge protection by doing too many requests in a short time. Please make a short break reading the stuff you already got." I certainly haven't done too many requests -- this is the first time I try to look at the wiki in weeks. In case it helps to track the problem down: My requests come via a Squid proxy on address 88.217.63.27. I am the only person using that proxy. The IP address is dynamic, but I have this one since May 1st (last redial) so I'm pretty sure nobody else was using this address recently. One very annoying "feature" of moinmoin, btw, is that it does not understand nested markup, e.g. monospace or italic in a section title. Do you know if they've fixed this, or intend to fix it in a later version? It was converted during the upgrade, but in a few places it failed. E.g. see the upgrade change done automatically: http://wiki.freebsd.org/FrontPage?action=diff&rev2=172&rev1=171 and the small fixup I had to do: http://wiki.freebsd.org/FrontPage?action=diff&rev2=173&rev1=172 > One very annoying "feature" of moinmoin, btw, is that it does not > understand nested markup, e.g. monospace or italic in a section title. > Do you know if they've fixed this, or intend to fix it in a later > version? Unfortunatly I have no idea. I actually don't use the wiki much myself so, except when things break, I don't look too much at it as I personally much prefer emacs + XML/HTML + cvs/hg + make + xslt for writing web pages :-). An overview of changes can be found at http://moinmo.in/MoinMoinRelease1.6 - but the detailed list is LONG so I have not read that list more closely. It should be noted that I certainly know that moinmoin is not perfect, and given a choice I would probably pick another wiki, but at this point I don't think the pain of switching is worth the trouble. -- Simon L. Yes, that is one interesting "feature" of moinmoin which I couldn't cleanly disable in 1.5 (I haven't tried yet for 1.6). The problem is that the wiki is running behind a reverse proxy so it thinks all requests come from the same IP and triggers the surge protection quite often. The "fix" I applied for 1.5 was to delete the surge-log file every minute (not pretty but it works), but they moved it in 1.6 so the "fix" didn't work anymore. I have changed it so hopefully the problem should be dealt with now. At some point I will see if the option to disable surge protection actually works now... Thanks for the report. -- Simon L. I had always been wondering: why not mediawiki in the first place? moinmoin looks much uglier to me, and that NoYouCannotUseSpacesHere thing is just so lame. Most website software has some sort of web-based content editor, but I suppose this means no more editing with vim/emacs. On the other hand, the current setup seems to limit dynamic interaction, as Murray observed in his blog. How much of an effect does this have on the community? Murray had mentioned that the XML syntax can be raise the barrier to entry for those who aren't web designers. What are some ways around this? Lastly, I see that your community uses your wiki a lot. Nobody has created compelling PHP content for the FreeBSD website, so the requirement is moot. =) I'm sure for your project it would be easy to find mirrors willing to install PHP or other software for more dynamic content. - Murray From murray at stokely.org Sun Jun 22 04:22:01 2008 From: murray at stokely.org (Murray Stokely) Date: Sun Jun 22 04:22:04 2008 Subject: freebsd website questions In-Reply-To: <43f35d30806191221r75a241e0h80db863aaa6a1362@mail.gmail.com> References: <43f35d30806191221r75a241e0h80db863aaa6a1362@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <2a7894eb0806212121h366bddb9of5a062ea759ce85@mail.gmail.com> On Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 12:21 PM, Ken Dreyer <ktdreyer@ktdreyer.com> wrote: > I am a college student assisting the OpenAFS project with redesigning > their website. I think the goal is to have the best of both worlds. If you are translating the content into multiple languages, then having XML files checked into a revision control system is really helpful. It can also be really easy to use templates, define variables for the name of the current release and have that be updated all over the site, etc.. Sure, any decent content management system can do that, but we have full control over it with XML and XSLT. For the main static content of an open source website, I think xml/xslt/makefiles are still a great choice. I would just be careful not to let that limit you. Some sections that need more regular updates could be hosted on a content management or blogging system and exported/reformated by the build system, perhaps. XSLT will let you pull in data from all kinds of sources, reformat it, and serve it up on your web site. Commit messages to OpenAFS, bug reports, and other content can easily be incorporated into an xslt based site. I'd like to see more top10 lists on our site. 10 most viewed/important bugs, 10 most recent changes, 10 most recently closed bugs, etc.. > Murray had mentioned that the XML syntax can be raise the barrier to > entry for those who aren't web designers. What are some ways around > this? For news stories and things like that where you want broad participation, I would look at a blog system or something to make it easy for others to post updates/stories/etc.. Your XML/makefile system can then reformat the posts in line with the rest of your site, without requiring people to author posts in XML. > Lastly, I see that your community uses your wiki a lot. They probably had a good reason for that, but I have no insight into this Simon is the only person who really deals with the administration of MoinMoin for us, as far as I know. There is of course a certain amount of inertia with these things, as we can't spend too much time switching systems once we've set one up unless there is a really compelling reason to do so. I haven't heard many complaints about the wiki, so I think it is serving our needs just fine for now. If we were starting from scratch I'd review them both of course and go with the better fit. - Murray From info at webdrops.net Sun Jun 22 10:00:14 2008 From: info at webdrops.net (Luca Serone) Date: Sun Jun 22 10:00:17 2008 Subject: www/124868: Commercial Internet Service Provider submissions Message-ID: <200806220951.m5M9pMRf083415@www.freebsd.org> >Number: 124868 >Category: www >Synopsis: Commercial Internet Service Provider submissions >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-www >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Jun 22 10:00:13 UTC 2008 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Luca Serone >Release: 6/7-stabile - i386/sparc64 >Organization: Webdrops ICT >Environment: >Description: Webdrops ICT - http://www.webdrops.net/ FreeBSD hosting based in Italy since 2004. It's important to decide what the goal is. For the main FreeBSD web site we want all new content to be vetted by trusted people before it goes, so I that makes the text/file based aproach compared to a CMS based system is less of a problem. If you have many clueless^Wnon-tech people who have to update a site, the tradeoff's will be different. I very much prefer static built web sites whenever possible, where one reason is that I much rather want to edit pages in $EDITOR (emacs for me) than in some web browser. Having a static built web site also mean you can test things off-line much simpler. Static web sites also makes the publishing part much simpler, in that you can do it with plain HTTP web server. This reduces security problems and means you need much less power of the web site (which is really nice for traffic spikes). You can do a lot of fancy things with dynamic web sites, but really... how often do you need it compared to the pain it causes. WRT. how to do it with todays technologies I would go with XML + XSLT + make as I done for my personal website http://simon.nitro.dk/src/ . This is based on code which came from a www.FreeBSD.org PoC (I think - not sure) via the TrustedBSD project. > Murray had mentioned that the XML syntax can be raise the barrier to > entry for those who aren't web designers. What are some ways around > this? Personally I don't really think HTML is that complex and, depending on your users, should not really be a real problem. Some people find CMS (e.g. wiki) markup language simpler, I really think it's the same only different... > Lastly, I see that your community uses your wiki a lot. What are your > thoughts about MoinMoin from an infrastructure admin's point of view? [hat: main wiki.FreeBSD.org admin] Generally moinmoin is rather painless to work with from an administrative point of view and it just takes care of itself. There are some work required for upgrading but it turns out not to be as bad in practice as one should think after reading the moinmoin docs. I would still always run it in a FreeBSD jail or similar, but its security track record is generally OK, especially compared to what else is out there. One nice thing about moinmoin from admin point of view is that since it's entirely file based it's pretty simple to duplicate the wiki to run test upgrades. This can of course be done if you have an DB backend, but not quite as easily. > I noticed that the Fedora project moved from MoinMoin to Mediawiki > recently, and I wondered: if you were able to start from scratch, what > wiki software would you use? I would probably go with mediawiki as I find it a bit more nice to work with from a user point of view, but I haven't been admin on a mediawiki installation, but I hear it's also rather painles. In a later mail you mention mirrors having PHP or not. It really depends on who your mirrors are. If mirrors are run by people with security clue they will likely be sceptical of mirroring PHP content. (PS. yes, I dislike PHP strongly, among other things, due to the crappy security record.) Hope this helps a bit. -- Simon L. I also notice that my build breaks at that point. As far as I can tell, this isn't a victim of my cvsup "refuse" file. Everything else under www/en makes it through. I can't see any www/en/multimedia/output directory in CVS. Where does it come from? This is my build command: make ENGLISH_ONLY=yes CVSROOT=/freebsd/ncvs DESTDIR=/freebsd/www install This is the error: ---------------- ===> en/multimedia cd output && make install DIRPRFX=multimedia/output/ cd: can't cd to output *** Error code 2 Stop in /freebsd/current/www/en/multimedia. *** Error code 1 ---------------- If I create a www/en/multimedia/output directory, I'm no better off because I'm missing that directory's Makefile. Any clues/rebukes appreciated. Thanks. -- John Marshall -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
