Just to make sure I checked again.

<Handbook>
The Freefonts collection ( x11-fonts/freefonts) includes many more fonts,
but most of them are intended for use in graphics software such as the
Gimp ...

[simon at arthur:freefonts] cd /usr/ports/x11-fonts/freefonts/ && make -V MASTER_SITES
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/

So I think that it was just a typo in the handbook.
