da(4) not attaching to USB drive

usbconfig -d X.Y set_config 1 always gives 
usbconfig: could not set config index: Input/output error
regardless if the disk is plugged in or not;

today once it connected by its own, i.e. it was sitting pluged in and
after a while it diconnected and connected again (without my action, I
was reading some mail):
