Xorg 7.4 and umass devices - a bad combination?

I did some more tests, this time with RELENG_7 / amd64:
root at kg-quiet# uname -a

I updated the ports tree, and installed Xorg 7.4 (and Xfce 4.6.0)
directly - no upgrades needed.

And now everything runs smooth - I can not reproduce the problem at all.
I am using the ati driver (xf86-video-ati-6.12.1) for Xorg in case that
matters.
