 On FreeBSD 5/6, the keyboard is started from "devd". Is usbd currently present 
 on the boot floppies?
 
 Maybe you could add a line to start kbdcontrol instead, which will work on all 
 versions of FreeBSD ? :
 
 kbdcontrol -k /dev/kbd0 < /dev/console
