Question about pipes and ugen

Sorry for dumb question, but would this be the reason why my Sony CLIE
(Palm wannabe) would loose first batch of characters it sends to the
laptop over USB connection prior to device being open on the laptop's
end.

I have not seen this in happen in Linux.
