Can't compile ath(4) into kernel

You are missing:

options         AH_SUPPORT_AR5416       # enable AR5416 tx/rx descriptors

For the 6.x -> 8 upgrade you are doing, I strongly suggest looking at the 
changes to GENERIC across your upgrade.  It would save you several e-mails to 
the mailing list.
