I've tried with portsnap[1-3].freebsd.org mirrors.
Can you check with:
    grep ^DISTVERSION /usr/ports/multimedia/vlc/Makefile

I'm getting:
    DISTVERSION=	1.0.0
but the last version committed 7h26m ago has 1.0.1
