I just found an error-message from the time I was still using 6.1-RELEASE:

<snip>
$ uname -a

herdubreid# burncd -f /dev/acd0 erase
^Casing CD, please wait..
herdubreid# burncd -f /dev/acd0 blank

fixating CD, please wait..
burncd: ioctl(CDRIOCFIXATE): Input/output error

The following appeared in /var/log/messages:

May 29 11:30:35 herdubreid kernel: acd0: FAILURE - READ_BIG MEDIUM ERROR

</snip>

I hope that helps somebody out there ;)
