abiword2 spellcheck not working

I have mailed one abiword developer a month ago about the spell checker
problems (either not working or coredumping!) and he is perfectly aware
now of the problem. Unfortunately they doesn't appear to have a FreeBSD
box to test fixes (the guy runs on powerpc so cannot put a freebsd
partition).
