problems with groff

If I move /usr/local/share/groff to /usr/local/share/groff.old, and run the 
man command, I get this error:

# man ls
Formatting page, please wait.../usr/bin/groff: can't find `DESC' file
/usr/bin/groff:fatal error: invalid device `ascii'
