Minor numbers are traditionally 8-bit, but FreeBSD has 24-bit minor
numbers with a gap between the upper 16 and the lower 8.  ls(1) prints
8-bit minors in a format compatible with other unices, and uses the
incompatible hex format only for minors above 255.
