problem with gdm

There is a gdm.sh.sample file in this directory. You mean you start it
yourself or put this script to /usr/local/etc/rc.d. 

And the gdm entry in my computer is:
gdm:*:92:92:GNOME Display Manager:/nonexistent:/sbin/nologin
