Adaptec 2120 performance very poor - What now?

I did some further testing after double checking the config via aaccli

I could have sworn I had set the write cache on and the read cache off.  
With those settings changed, the 2200s seems to provide adequate 
performance.

I am still curious if there are any products out there that could 
provide better performance.
