how to boot off scsi not ide

I can case the motherboard bios is flawed. You can try to setup the right
parameters for the ide drives. BUT disable the drive, as if it's not connected.

This should result in the bios to ignore the ide drives. And then resort to
scsi. Once kernel is running. It can figure out the ide drives on it's own.
