New xorg fails with "module ABI major version (6) doesn't match the server's version (12)"

I just had a recurrence of this exact problem after a 'pkg upgrade -y' 
(which worked AOK since I didn't do any messing w/ ports before :-/ ). I 
used the portmaster command & also had the same net result (drivers 
reinstalled by pkg_static, rather than pkg, although they were compiled 
up locally) .... My question is: Is there a way to get pkg to do this, 
rather than ports/portmaster ? I prefer all 1 package manager as much as 
possible, & for me that is pkg, except where necessary to fall back on 
ports (flash plugin, for example). TIA ....
