trouble setting up wireless

It doesn't.

kldstat -v | grep ath_
101 pci/ath_pci

I tried disabling ifconfig_ath0="DHCP" in /etc/rc.conf, rebooting the 
system, with wlan0 still being reported as having no carrier.

Running out of things to try...
