Polytropon, you mention ppd files (.ppd or .ppd.gz).

Is this the binary plugin that hplip was unable to install for me?

Or am I grasping at straws?

Somehow I thought the binary plugin was much bigger than the .ppd.gz files found in 
/usr/local/share/ppd/HP/
