ZFS has its own command set and management tools. There are a number of talks about production readiness of ZFS. I have never had issues with it, but my own personal experiences are not true of the world.

i avoid using the raw block devices, and use gpart and create a partition the size of the device, and then use the /dev/gpart/label devices.
