Where did the handbook go?

It should be there, if it was installed and not deleted.

But you can always csup the latest version.  The example supfile is 
/usr/share/examples/cvsup/doc-supfile.

If you want to build the docs, see /usr/ports/misc/freebsd-doc-de.
