Sounds like a good idea.
Samba can handle connections from the MS machines.
I am not familiar with Asterisk, but it is in the ports
at /usr/ports/net/asterisk
You may want to go with an AMD64 type CPU system rather than i386
because the sizes you are talking about are pretty big - though
far from too big for either.
