Geom_eli problems

Hello list.

I'm running this;

FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE #0: Thu Jan  1 14:37:25 UTC 2009 
     root at logan.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

and I'm trying to encrypt my usb memory with geli.

But it does not work according to the handbook or this homepage

This works

geli init -s 4096 -l 256 /dev/da0
Enter new passphrase:
Reenter new passphrase:


This does not work

geli attach /dev/da0

geli: Cannot read metadata from /dev/da0: Invalid argument.
