It has always just worked properly for me by adding them to ~/.fonts/
and restarting the application. The handbook section on fonts in Xorg
also seems to confirm this:
"all fonts in /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/ as well as ~/.fonts/ are
already made available to Xft-aware applications."
