Backspace Key Not Working

.vimrc on the 7.0 box:

I haven't manually set $TERM to anything, however I am running this
inside "screen" (using UTF-8 encoding). So screen automatically sets
$TERM to "screen".

I just checked, and if I connect directly to the 7.0 box using PuTTy,
the backspace key works fine all the time.
