mounting ext2fs partitions on FBSD7 ( third time a charm?)

Could somebody please throw me a pointer ...
i have followed every instruction on every book and/or how-to ... yet ...

What am I doing wrong??

root at inferna:~ # uname -sr
FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE
root at inferna:~ # kldstat

/mnt: Not a directory.
root at inferna:~ # umount /mnt
root at inferna:~ # cd /mnt
root at inferna:/mnt # mount -t ext2fs /dev/ad0s8 .
root at inferna:/mnt # ls
ls: .: Not a directory
root at inferna:/mnt # cd ~
root at inferna:~ # umount /mnt
root at inferna:~ # file /mnt/
/mnt/: directory
root at inferna:~ # cd /mnt
root at inferna:/mnt # ls
root at inferna:/mnt #

dmesg says _nothing_
_Any_ hint will be more than welcome :)
