Why FreeBSD not popular on hardware vendors

I'm not sure about this, as there is just a project in titled "Allowing
for parallel builds in the FreeBSD Ports" on
http://www.freebsd.org/projects/summerofcode-2008.html ... ?

Every time I tried to build a port with -j it failed ..
