I've read this entire thread and I'm having the exact same issue, with
a different nvidia card on Fbsd6.2.  I'm sure we both have different
hw.  That leaves one thing in common, we both have the new nvidia
driver installed and that is what is causing the issue.  I have already
rebuilt my kernel.  BTW I have nvidia geforce 6600 gt.

Time to check nvidia's site/forums.
