loopback won't enable automatically

Have you tried setting network_interfaces? Here's the relevant part of
my rc.conf:

# Network settings
network_interfaces="lo0 rl0 rl1"
ifconfig_lo0="inet 127.0.0.1"
ifconfig_rl0="inet 10.0.0.150/24 polling"
ifconfig_rl1="inet 192.168.0.1/24 polling"
