One of my desktops started doing this after a -STABLE update a few weeks ago.
I worked around it by setting
hw.acpi.thermal.polling_rate=0
in /etc/sysctl.conf. For a one-time change obviously you can just run
# sysctl hw.acpi.thermal.polling_rate=0
