Strange X problem

Therein lies the problem.  There *is* an entry in /etc/ttys:
ttyv8   "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon"  xterm   on secure

Guess I'll just start double-checking everything.  Maybe there's a typo 
somewhere.
