R 2.3.0 fails to compile: undefined reference to `R_running_as_main_program'

Last night , after portsnap(-ping) and trying to recompile the 
statistical software R from 2.2.1 to 2.3.0 I get the following:

# cd 
/usr/ports/math/R
# make
===>  Building for R-2.3.0
