Here is an example:

file /usr/bin/man

on my machine outputs:

/usr/bin/man: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (FreeBSD), for 
FreeBSD 5.4-CURRENT (rev 3), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
