UPDATE:

Okay, so I seem to have done some work here connecting in different
physical routes via SSH. It seems that I can almost always fail a
wget or larger x-fer when I SSH in via wireless, specifically a
Powerbook running OS 10.4.1. If I wire up via an Ethernet cable I
cannot reproduce this, even when travelling through router. Wireless
is an Apple Airport. I'm off to google elsewhere but if anyone has
any experience with this it would be great to hear.
