Don't know about the error.
But for getting the sound support, you can also
simply load the sound modules:

  # kldload sound
  # kldload snd_ess

after which you can try sound.
For future reboots put this in /boot/loader.conf:

  sound_load="YES"
  snd_ess_load="YES"
