gzip from ports vs gzip from system

Thanks for the tip Dan. it was mounting as v2. Mounting by hand as v3
addressed the problem, though why it was dying @ 4 GB ( - 16K) instead
of 2 GB baffles me.
The other variable here is amd, which I wanst using for the full,
correct run ( 6 GB .gz file).
will see how it goes.
